Post 7 - Diversity in the classroom

Please view the youtubes posted about Diversity in the Classroom. We briefly discussed it in class this week, but these youtubes enhance the discussion we had in class. For your blog post this week, please reply to the following question - and don't forget to reply to a classmate:What qualities and experiences do you possess or lack that might affect your ability to be a multiculturally aware teacher?

  1. The two videos were very informative regarding diversity in the classroom. I think I possess the quality of being open minded. I agree that even though we should all be treated equally, we all have different experiences in life and different cultures that we can bring to a classroom.

  2. I learned a lot from the 2 videos shown, understanding diversity will be in the classroom and knowing how to deal with it is a very important aspect for a teacher. I believe that I see that students, no matter what culture, should be treated equally. It is very important to me that kids are not picked on or made fun of because of what they look like or believe.

  3. I agree with michael when he talks about how people have been brought up differently and have had many different experiences in their life. Because we don't know about all of these experiences we can't judge the students, just do what we can to help them succeed.

I think that I can be a multiculturally aware teacher. I think it is important to be open minded and I try my best to be that way. I think the one quality that might affect my ability to be a multicultural teacher is understanding some of the student's accents, if they had one. I don't want the student to give up on learning just because I can't understand them.

I agree with Michael and Kacey that equality is key in the classroom. No student should be brought down because of what they believe and what background they have.

i believe that the way our generation is being brought up we are around multiculture everyday and have learned how to handle it. I know that I have the quality to be understanging when it comes to diversity in the classroom. I hope my classrooms are diverse because i believe that it adds to the education of the students.

i agree with margaret on understanding accents. Even though i cant understand the student i would never keep them from learning. If i have to try harder with them in order for them to understand it then i will do whatever it takes, because they deserve to have the same oppurtunities as those students who speak english as their first language.

  8. i like to think that i am capable of being an effective teacher to a multicultural classroom. i am not going to lie, i have been somewhat sheltered in my life. i went to the same grade school from three year old preschool until 8th grade, and then to high school with almost all of the same people. there were less than 100 students in my graduating class, so i was not given the opportunity to see much diversity. however, i believe that i can assess any situation with a student from a different culture because i am open minded. i would never hinder a student from learning or allow a student not to learn just because they are different than the majority of the class. everyone is different and i think we as teachers should embrace students for individuality.

  9. i agree with kimberly about our generation. everyone is different and our generation of teachers is going to be ready for it. our country is changing and it is our job as teachers to prepare them for the new world they are going to embark upon when they leave our room.

  10. In the first video, I especially liked what the first teacher had to say about how it's important not to make the one ethnically diverse person the representative of an entire country or culture. I remember in high school in my world religion class there was a Muslim, and our teacher basically made him teach the section on Islam. I could tell the poor kid felt really uncomfortable. I like to think that i posses more tact than that.

  11. On the other hand, I agree with Kimberly. If a student wants to talk about their culture with his or her classmates, it is a wonderful advantage to everyone else in the class.

  12. i do agree with with these 2 videos we need to aware that there are different cultures and we need to teach about them. Or share with the classroom especially if you have a diverse room not only that people need to learn outside of there culture. im pretty sure they would be suprised how neat different cultures are.

I think the mom in the video parent involvement contributes to student success made a good point when she said if she wasn't interested in how her daughter did in school her daughter might see it as not having to take her school work as seirously as she should. I think its really hard for students to put forth the effoert to want to learn if their parents do not show an interest in it. There was one boy in the class i observed that actually had to get himself up and ready for school and catch the bus on time by himself everyday while his mom was in bed and I observed a first grade class. I think it is really hard for most kids to do that at such a young age. In the culturally conscious nideo one lady said that people should all learn to be tolerant but i disagree with this statement. I believe the word tolerant has kind of a bad conotation like you're just putting up with somebody because you have to so I think acceptance would be a better word. For being multiculturally aware I dont think that I am very knowledgable in this matter. I do have some friends of different cultures that I love to learn about and I am always wanting to learn more abouot different people and their cultures.

I agree with margaret that to be a multiculture teacher you need to be aware. Being aware of students and their backgrounds will help teachers a lot.

  16. I feel like I am very accepting towards other cultures which is a very important trait in a teacher. I have had many multicultural relationships and interacted with different cultures so I feel like I will be able to relate to different student. In 5 years, the population will be even more diversified which is going to help connect society together. From there, new communication skills will be developed.

  17. I agree with kelsey- I think it would be very hard for a student who's parent doesn't show interest. The kid will not be interested. I think in many public school districts, this is a huge problem for some.

  18. I believe that I have a quality that some teachers may lack, which is experience. All the schools I ever went to throughout my life have been very diverse. Im a very observant person, so I have witness activities and programs that try to tie in 'culture & diversity' into lessons. I know how to communicate and interact with people of different races, ethics, backgrounds, etc.

  19. I agree with Jaclyn and others; growing up being around the same people and in schools that arent very diverse can influence youre capablilities of teaching multiculture. But anyone can learn what to do and how to do it.

  20. I think it is important for teachers to understand diversity and be able to use it to their advantage in the classroom. I think i have the quality of being able to communicate to people from whatever background or ethinty they come from. I find it very interesting to listen and talk to people from different backgrounds than me. Teachers should learn from the students that are maybe a little different from them and use it to become more effective.

  21. I agree with Jaclyn that as teachers we must be ready for whatever is thrown at us. College has provided me with an opportunity to be around a lot of people from different cultures. This will help me when going to teach, because now i know how to relate to several groups of people.
