Post 3 - Teaching in the 21st Century
We've really covered alot of material this past week...readings from the text book, the assessment article, and the youtube videos. You've participated in individual activities as well as group work. Let's think practical for a minute or two, what is your current state? How are you assimilating the information you have received up to this point? What mental activities have you been using to work through this material? You can respond to your thoughts about our in-class discussions, readings, activities, and/or youtube videos. Just a reminder to not only post your comment, but reply to one of your peers as well!

I really enjoy having this class. The way Mrs. Bishop is getting her information across to us is awesome. I'm actually picking up on information and able to relate to it which helps me to actually learn. How she's providing the material is starting to make me think of other ideas which would work to translate information to students of my own. The youtube video of "Did you know?" was great and the realization that 10 years from now teaching will be completely different definetely caught my eye on how to expand my teaching towards more technology.
ReplyDeleteBoth youtube videos we have watched in class were interesting to me. I liked, "What Teacher's Make" because it taught me how a lot of people might not understand the effect teachers actually do have on student's lives. Also, the "Did you know?" taught me how technology is going to improve and be more important to teaching in the next 10 years. The way Mrs. Bishop teaches us keeps me interested. She tells us stories that has happened to her which we can relate back to our own lives. She wants to interact with the class and I believe that is the best way of teaching.
ReplyDeleteI agree with what Courtney said about the way Mrs. Bishop teaches because I wrote I liked it too. Also what she said about technology and how it is going to possibly improve and change the way we teach in our future.
ReplyDeleteI think that the way Mrs. Bishop shows an interest to what she is teaching to us. I'm not gonna lie I never wanted to go to class at 230 to 345 but she makes class interesting and actively involves the students. With the class involvement she lets us learn the information instead of go in one ear and out the other.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Kasey Im not gonna lie Ive never heard of a wiki until last meeting. That was new to me. I am also gonna admit i have never used a blog.
ReplyDeleteJustin- this is my first time using a blog also. I like it. My mother and sister are both teachers and I showed them this webpage. It is a good way for all of us to interact with each other without being uncomfortable.
ReplyDeleteI really liked the did you know video. It made me think about all the new ways teachers can use to get through to the students. I def want to be one of the teachers that uses technology in the class room.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Kacey, Courtney and Justin about Mrs. Bishop's teaching style. I like that she's really passionate about what ahe teachs and that she interacts with us and has us interact with each other.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoy this class also. It gets me excited about having my own class of students someday. The excitment Mrs. Bishop brings to the classroom definately makes the class much more fun and the information is much easier to understand b/c of it.
ReplyDeleteI agree with the other students about the videos that you showed to us on youtube. They put things more into perspective for me, and made me realize the kinds of things I'm going to have to deal with.
ReplyDeleteI really like the different ways we are approaching education between blogging, the youtube videos, and the readings and I also like the different ways we're learning how to teach. I really think its good to have all of these different options for teaching since every child learns in a different way, now there are many ways to approach them.
ReplyDeleteI agree with kacey, technology is improving quickly and as teachers we have to make sure that we keep up with it so we can learn the new ways to keep our students educated.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoy class I like the interaction as well as the youtube clips I can not wait to observe a classroom. I am learning alot of new ways to teach our students of tommarrow. That really excites me that I have pick this career!!!
ReplyDeleteI agree with you having class at 2:30 really was not my first choice but I really like how Ms. Bishop keeps the class involved. I also like the blog it makes it easier to talk to classmates out of class. Because I just started at Lindenwood and don't know much about the campus or have meet many friends.
ReplyDeleteI will have to agree with all of you so far, Christina, I couldn't have said it better, when you said, "It really excites me that I have picked this career." That is an example of the quality of teaching that I have noticed with Mrs. Bishop. She teaches with enthusiasm, that keeps the students interest, not only does it keep us interested, but it also gives us at least 1 class to actually look forward to attending. Thats what is important, ATTITUDE, the attitude you show, will reflect the attitude you receive. Thats why I want to pursue this career, I want to motivate a student to want to do better, for...well I guess a more intellegent America, and because if I could contribute a small percentage to that, then I made a small difference, and it makes a huge difference to me...anyway, so I hope to learn much, much more. In addition, I hope I didn't bore anybody.
ReplyDeletemrs bishop has a good teaching style that makes learning interesting. I really liked the youtube videos. The way technology is changing is really extraordinary. It will really help with education in the future.
ReplyDeletei agree with kacey, everyone especially teachers need to stay current with new technology in order to be great teachers
ReplyDeleteIn this class it is very easy to sit through. its not your typical boring class Mrs. Bishop does make it very intersting and its very easy for me to learn. I never really thought about how teaching is going to change in the next ten years but that video really showed me that it is and i need to start thinking of things.
ReplyDeleteI agree with kelsey about Mrs, Bishops teaching syle. i like how she is passionateand doesnt read straight out of the book like some teachers
ReplyDeleteI am really enjoying this class. Mrs. Bishop makes me want to be a teacher even more. When she asked, when has a teacher used technology in class to teach, I wanted to answer, "You did just now". I went home and told my boyfriend how inspired I felt and I wish she could be my mentor. I've also noticed myself critiqueing my other teachers teaching styles. I have one now, she is a great lady, but every day we go through a power point presentation and I find myself disengaged. I think this class is going to get the ball rolling for me (us) as far as knowing what and how I want to teach.
ReplyDeleteAs Justin and Courtney revealed, I have never blogged either. It is something that is really catching on with younger people and a way for kids to communicate their feelings and ideas with their peers. I think it is important to keep up with technology so that we can relate to our studetns on their level.
ReplyDeleteWhen mrs. bishop brought up that technology is always changing...the most intersting thing i thought was that you could buy the hang held book reader and just purchase the books electronically. I did some research on it bc i was so intrigued, there are not many books that you can purchase yet but i see an oppurtunity for there too be a lot more in the near future. My little sister goies to Barat Academy and each student has their own laptop and their text books are pre loaded on them before they get them, this way the students and the parents dont have to bother with it, which i think is a huge bonus.
ReplyDeletesince im almost the last to blog i can say i agree with everyone. I too have never blogged and when i told my boyfriend i had to blog he looked at me and said "you blog?" i thought that was funny... also everyone mentions that mrs. bishop makes the class intersting and easy to sit through, i agree with those but i also have to add that after her class i get in this mood that makes me want to start teaching my own class immmediately.
ReplyDeleteI really like this class. Mrs. Bishop is a great teacher. I never feel lost when she describes something important. I'm glad she showed us the videod "What Teachers Make." That video really inspired me to do well in my education classes and make me want to be a teacher even more.
ReplyDeleteI agree with the few that have talked about dreading a 2:30 class. The first day I thought this class was going to be a boring evening class, but it turned out to be the opposite. And also like everyone else, I enjoy the blogging. I had to do this many times in a class I had last school year and loved it. I was very excited doing this again.
ReplyDeleteMy mind hasn't engaged itself in the classroom material. The youtube videos we watch in class are interesting, but sometimes I don't think it is neccessary, but I know it's your way to open/close discussions. I know that this course is called 'Orientation to Education', but I feel like I already know everything that is being presented. The group work we have done is somewhat interested and I believe that the blogs is a good way for us to communicate to each other without being awkward.
ReplyDeleteThe 'Did You Know' video was full of facts and was tasteful to watch, like everyone else said.
ReplyDeleteThe thing that struck me the most was the number of 4 year olds that can use a computer! our world is changing, even from when I was younger. I have a niece that will be 3 in August and to think that she is going to be smarter than me is so WEIRD!!!!!
ReplyDeleteI agree with Carra. The videos are more striking than the book material. I guess that is because I am a product of our generation!
ReplyDeleteI personally enjoyed watching the "Did you know?" video we watched in class last week because there were a few facts myself that I personally didn't know. It's interesting how much of a fast paced world we are with the children of today and their adaptions to the technology we have. When I was growing up the internet wasn't a big deal until half-way through middle school almost highschool. Now we have kids as young as 4 that know how to use a computer....
ReplyDeleteI also agree with the majority of the class that enjoys how mrs. bishop makes the class fun, its really a no BS she wants us to all be good teachers and I appreciate that she's trying to get us there.
ReplyDeleteGuys - although I am very flattered by your comments, this is not about me - this is about you! I always try to model to you effective teaching. I truly want you all to be successful in this class and in your own class in the future:-)
ReplyDeleteIf you post after my post you will need to bring me a hard copy of your post.
Well first off. It took me forever to find this blog because it is not posted on the other website. And if you cant tell already I am like computer retarded. I have never blogged before and I just learned how to use email. Myspace and face book are new to me to. So I have learned much these past couple months but I still have plenty of learning to do. But I think technology is great for teaching because it pertains all learning aspects such as visual, and hands-on, and hearing. Children learn better when they find it interesting.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Carra as well. Visually the videos are more appealing. Reading books you can easily lose focuss. But the videos apply visual appeal.
